1. Believe Me

I wouldn't believe me
if I were you
take off your eyes
and take down your face

there's not enough grace here
to carry them far
unbuckle your skin
turn yourself inside out

there's no kindness here
let's leave it hung out
tie up you hair
to that tree over there

there's not enough light here
let's leave them up high
cast off your feet
oh for there's no retreat

there's no path that's concrete
no roads to save the day
undo you arms
oh they've got nothing to grasp

there's no hand to clasp
there is no one hungry for you
unbutton you teeth
lay your, lay that tongue to dry

there's no words to say
and no one to cry
for your soul was all mine
and I ate all I could

and I left you a shadow
to fall down beside
but I wouldn't believe me
if I were you

'cause I'm a half eaten person
with nothing to do
oh I fuck up the things
that I bump into

‘cause I'm a crossed out remark
in a history so stark
that if you believed all I said
then well you're as stupid as I say

and there'd be nothing to do
but empty your pockets
and just walk away
‘cause there's nowhere to hide

but I wouldn't believe
all that I say
no I wouldn't believe it at all
if I were were you

2. Crossed Out Lovers

Two cold crossed out lovers
strung themselves to a wire
and swung out over their love
to see where was the fire

there were only flies and cold contraptions
and laced up lines of unanswered questions
and the fight was undone
crumbled and cracked

into fall out, fall off
fall into the unknown

as they reeled themselves in
it was dead between their eyes
as they reeled themselves in
it was frozen to their touch

they were lost, uncrossed and colliding
with their futures which grabbed at them like a punch in the face
or a breath of fresh air
or the breaking of day

into fall out, fall off
fall into the unknown

their hearts were cramped prisoners
with everywhere to go
their hearts were leaden feet
with everywhere to go

it was a loss
it was so cross

3. Son of Rhythm

Those voices they said to me
what's in your prophecy
when I looked into it's eyes
all I could see were fallacies and lies

the son of rhythm cast his beat
and the knocking of the nets fell to his feet
his heart wasn't really in it
the chords of love-songs were the only things that seemed to fit

her legs were as high as the stars
the chords of love-songs fell from her arms
she fumbled to pick them up
but the son of rhythm had poured them into a cup

he drank those chords and wrote his song
a song to break a history that was far too long
cracks appeared in the life he lead
and the rhythm he followed died and bled

the love-song girl without her chords
was a lacklustre mess no longer adored
she walked the skies in the search of her loss
and turned to drink self doubt and hard dross

her legs no longer reached the stars
she sat on her arse and weeped for what was
a life of love lost forever
a half hearted rhythm never together

the son of rhythm rejoiced
his heart was a cage of lions
his eyes burned with fire
the fire of the chords of which he admired

his step was the lightest touch
hanging from the ceiling it was all too much
all that he had wanted was within his reach
he believed in the words his love-songs preached

those voices they said to me
what's in your prophecy
when I looked into it's eyes
all I could see were fallacies and lies

4. Packed Up Smile

Who packed up her smile
like groceries in a bag
and when did it become acceptable
to crush her like a rag

and the nights, they are suffering
and the days, they are suffering
they miss the oceans from her face

who picked up her smile
leaving in place, only a blank slate
the drift is often too slow
to know, until it's too late

and the nights, they are suffering
and the days, they are suffering
they miss the commotion from her face

who broke up that smile
crushed and plundered, thrown to the floor
and when did it become acceptable
to block it out, to close the door

and the nights, they are suffering
and the days, they are suffering
they miss the emotion from her face

5. Whole Roll

Whole roll up my eyelids
and wrap my face in cloth
sing to me in verses
verses I cannot replace

whole roll the stars away
the urgent times, the peel and chime
the cornered caress, the empty breast
all that you find that's mine

whole roll up my finished legs
my charcoal fingers, my hot handed chase
my turn of phrase upon your lips
my open handed, candid embrace

whole roll up your torpid colour
your church of angels, your corseted smile
whole roll up your electric touch
your wave of and eye, your quiet cry

whole roll up my eyelids
hold back and reach inside
talk to me in murmured tales
tales I cannot contrive

whole roll the stones away
take my blindness and cast it astray
hold my hope underwater until
it breathes no more the life it filled

whole roll up my eyelids
and wrap my face in cloth
cast a hand across my breast
and leave me for rebirth

whole roll the stars away
their time has passed, no shadows to cast
no muted hands, no fine edged lips
will pass these eyes, the past is cast

whole roll up my finished legs
their worn out feet that tread no more
the steps in four, my empty chase
all that I thought would be yours

whole roll up your haloed face
your voice of an angel, your knowing embrace
whole roll up your charged up smile
your sideways glance, your hidden trial

whole roll up my eyelids
hold back and reach inside
whisper charms into my ears
charms of love and fears

whole roll the stones away
take my blindness and cast it astray
hold my hope underwater until
it breathes no more the life it filled

6. Pile of Books

She lay back on a pile of books
as the family of fishermen spun out their hooks
weaving her stories on the backs of absolutes
the room heaved under the pressure of roots
as the waves lapped at her window

forever trapped in her wooden fortress
casting shadows on the earthen walls
the shrieks and cries of the seabird's calls
as they travelled the world

to bring her tales
to weave into the fabric of life itself
tales of wonder and tales of woe
tales of love and murder flowed

the high seas were awash with danger
much did she know about it's anger
the fishermen would bring their catch
straight into the arms of our heroin to dispatch
often they gave her lies, mostly they were uncouth

but between those slender fingers those stories bore truths
the truths of a battle to tame and indifferent world
the truths that the stars seemed would never give up

as the waves lapped at her window
as the roots pushed deep into the soil
the earthen walls that had imprisoned her
were never to shake or recoil

she lay back on a pile of books
as the fishermen spun out their hooks
weaving her stories on the back of absolutes
as the room heaved and shuddered

as the waves lapped at her window
as the roots pushed deep into the soil
the earthen walls that had imprisoned her
were never to shake or recoil

7. So Can't

so can't keep up
so can't keep up
so can't keep up
those tears they run and hide under their skin

so can't hold on
so can't hold on
so can't hold on
two legs, two eyes
numb arms, arms of stone

so can't stretch out
so can't stretch out
so can't stretch out
the life and warmth and fingers they hold them between

it's so heartbreaking
it's so heartbreaking
it's so heartbreaking
it's so heartbreaking

two legs, two eyes
so can't hold up
two hands that shake
and skate their face, one face, one body

and frozen in glass
I guilty clasp
the half empty eyes
that won't compromise, so black, so black a gaze

two legs, two eyes
one face, two hands
that shake and skate that face
that shake and skate that face

it's so heartbreaking
it's so heartbreaking
it's so heartbreaking
it's so heartbreaking

8. Day Stretch

And as the day stretched casually into the night
and lay it's head on it's shoulder
it walked out into the street
and lifted it's fingers from the pavement
it drifted up into the sky
leaving us to fend for ourselves in the night

days like fire
evenings that expire into the night
days like fire
evenings that expire into the night

and as we crouched and huddled together
fearful to be left alone to make it right
we saw a strange and miraculous site
of our dreams lighting up and taking flight
we untangled and we chased them down
and held them to our faces which they wrapped around

days like fire
evenings that expire into the night
days like fire
evenings that expire into the night
